Pilates is a system of full body movements, designed by Joseph Pilates, to tone, strengthen and condition the entire body. It was developed in the 20th century by Joseph Pilates because he was reportedly a very sick child he devoted his adult life to understanding the fundamentals of a healthy system and body. From what we know about Pilates, he ended up working various jobs throughout his life as a gymnast, a circus performer, a professional boxer, a bodybuilder and a self-defence trainer for the police schools and Scotland Yard (among other jobs!), so we can safely presume that he was doing something right!
Joseph Pilates-
Not only is health a normal condition, but it is our duty to not only to attain it but to maintain it”
Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility, but there is an odd stigma surrounding Pilates that it is an intimidating form of exercise to try, and nothing could be further from the truth! There is little equipment involved, it is a school of movement that can be easily adapted to suit the fitness levels of all its participants and, with the right instructor, it can be learned very easily. The beauty of Pilates is that it can be practiced virtually anywhere which makes it very convenient and affordable. It is also an uplifting and invigorating workout that seems to boost serotonin levels and leave people with a better mind-set for the day ahead!
